Since the first wrist watches were invented in the 1860’s, one of the longest standing traditions is the timeless design of quality watches. Along with the beauty and admiration that make some designs last forever, there are also interesting trends in the development of new luxury watches. These trends feed off the tradition and heritage of classic timepieces, and add subtle nuances to the language of luxury watch design.

From a technical perspective, new materials and product development techniques are allowing for interesting new product concepts. Perhaps the clearest trend of this sort is the adoption of high–tech ceramics as the base material of watch cases. Ceramic is both light–weight and scratch–resistant, and its durability is matched by elegant looks and smooth touch. IWC is one of the brands which pioneered the adoption of ceramics, but quality ceramics can now be found across many brands. |

New developments in tourbillion mechanisms have also become more popular. A tourbillion – first invented in 1795 for clocks and later for pocket watches – is a mechanism that counters the effect of gravity on accuracy by enabling the entire escapement to rotate in place, with new rotated positions offsetting any inaccuracies. While there may be simpler ways of achieving accuracy today, the complex tourbillion concept is becoming popular again for its sheer design brilliance. For this reason, tourbillion watches often come in clear casings to highlight their uniqueness. It is noteworthy that this design concept, which at one time was exclusively found on men’s watches, is now gaining popularity also in women’s fashion. |

Not all trends are driven by technological capabilities. Pure design trends are also moving the watch market subtly. This is most noticeable in the adoption of gemstones in watch bands and faceplate design. Of course, this is not a new concept, but certainly is found more often in new watch designs, which are making beautiful use of the classic diamonds as well as rubies, sapphires and other interesting gem combinations. |

Designers are also starting to break the mold in terms of standard watch design components. By incorporating shapes into watchband designs such as floral gemstone patterns, the watch is becoming more of a piece of jewelry than a functional object. Taking this decomposition to an extreme, we are now seeing watches that are intentionally designed to be difficult to read the time. By focusing on the beauty, and hiding the function, the watch captures a secretive and mysterious meaning that highlights the personality traits of the owner. |

Interesting color is also starting to be seen, in ways far beyond those used in less expensive watches . Examples of bold color designs include the recent adoption of rose gold, which gives dramatic pink-ish hues in both men’s and women’s watches. |
