Casio DBC-610: When a Calculator Watch Became a Personal Organiser

Long before we carried smartphones capable of storing thousands of contacts, managing our calendars and answering almost any question imaginable, Casio was trying to put some of those same everyday tools onto our wrists.
The Casio DBC-610 is one of the best examples.
At first glance, it is unmistakably a calculator watch. There is the familiar keypad sitting beneath the display, a design that has become almost shorthand for 1980s Casio. But the DBC-610 was considerably more ambitious than a watch that could simply tell the time and do a bit of arithmetic.
It was a Databank Calculator — effectively a tiny electronic organiser worn on the wrist.
And even today, several decades later, it remains one of the most interesting watches from an era when Casio seemed determined to discover just how much technology it could squeeze into a digital watch.
More Than a Calculator Watch

Casio had already been producing calculator watches for years by the time the DBC-610 appeared. Models such as the C-80 and CA-50 had demonstrated that there was a genuine market for putting a calculator on your wrist.
The DBC series took the idea considerably further.
Rather than simply adding a calculator to a digital watch, Casio combined timekeeping, calculation and personal information management into a single device.
The DBC-610 used Module 676, and its specification was impressive.
There was an 8-digit calculator, but also a Telememo databank for storing names and telephone numbers, a schedule function for appointments, world time, a countdown timer, daily alarm and a 1/100-second stopwatch.
In other words, the keypad wasn't there just for doing sums.
It was there because you could actually enter information into your watch.
That distinction is what makes the DBC-610 so interesting.
A Phone Book on Your Wrist

One of the DBC-610's headline features was its 50-record memory, shared between Telememo and Schedule-Memo.
Telememo entries could store a name of up to nine letters together with a telephone number of up to 12 digits, giving the owner a miniature electronic address book that was always available on the wrist. Schedule-Memo records used the same memory pool and could store a short message together with a date and time.
That might sound almost comically limited today. A modern smartphone can store thousands of contacts without us ever thinking about capacity.
But put yourself back into the late 1980s.
Important telephone numbers were often memorised, written in notebooks or kept in physical address books. If you were away from home and needed a number you hadn't brought with you, there was no cloud account waiting to retrieve it.
Having personal contact information stored electronically on your wrist was genuinely useful.
The same Module 676 platform therefore offered schedule memory as part of the same 50-record capacity, allowing appointments and reminders to be entered into the watch. It also included a protected secret-data area, an unusually sophisticated feature for a wristwatch of the period.
This wasn't a smartwatch in the modern connected sense — there was no internet, no Bluetooth and certainly no notifications arriving from your phone.
But conceptually, Casio was already exploring something remarkably familiar: using the wrist as a place not just to display the time, but to organise information.
Before the DBC-610: The DBC-600
Before the DBC-610 came the DBC-600, a 1985 model powered by Module 563. It established much of the formula that the later DBC-610 would develop further and, for me, it also has a much more personal connection.
My father owned a DBC-600 when I was growing up, and years later he passed that same watch down to me. That alone makes it special, but I also genuinely prefer some aspects of its design. The DBC-600 has a more angular, blocky, unmistakably mid-1980s appearance. Even the small key symbol on the keypad is a detail I've always liked. It is the sort of tiny graphic flourish that gives these early Casios so much character.

Put the DBC-600 and DBC-610 side by side and the family resemblance is obvious, but the later watch looks noticeably smoother and more refined.
If I had to explain the difference in Terminator 2 terms, the DBC-610 is the T-1000: sleeker, cleaner and more advanced. The DBC-600 is Arnie's T-800: blockier, tougher-looking and unmistakably from an earlier generation.
The DBC-610 may be the more evolved machine, but aesthetically I still have a soft spot for the DBC-600. And because the example in my collection is the very watch my father used to wear, that preference goes well beyond specifications.
The Keypad Is the Star
Visually, the DBC-610 is dominated by its keypad.
Numbers occupy the lower section of the watch, while the same keys are also used for entering letters and operating the Databank functions.
It gives the DBC-610 its unmistakable appearance.
This was technology designed to be interacted with.
Instead of hiding the watch's complexity behind menus and a handful of buttons, Casio effectively put a tiny keyboard on the front.
There is something wonderfully unapologetic about it.
The DBC-610 doesn't try to disguise the fact that it is a gadget. Quite the opposite — the gadgetry is the design.
Above the keypad sits a multi-section LCD capable of presenting considerably more information than a conventional digital watch. The display works together with the keyboard to make the DBC-610 feel more like a miniature electronic terminal than a simple wristwatch.
Module 676
At the heart of the DBC-610 is Casio Module 676, one of the reasons the watch remains particularly interesting to collectors.
The module combines an unusually broad collection of functions:

Module 676 uses a CR1616 battery, with Casio documentation specifying approximately two years of battery life and accuracy of around ±15 seconds per month.
The same module also appeared in related models including the DBC-61 and DBC-62, making them close relatives of the DBC-610 beneath their different exterior designs. The DBC-61 was the black resin version, pairing the same Module 676 functions with a black resin case and resin strap for a more utilitarian look.

So When Was the DBC-610 Released?
Dating vintage Casios precisely can sometimes be more difficult than it first appears, and the DBC-610 is a good example.
The model is sometimes described online as a 1985 watch, but that date is difficult to reconcile with surviving service-reference information, which dates Module 676 to January 1988.
The DBC-610-1 is then clearly documented in a 1989 Casio catalogue among the company's Data Bank Calculator range.
The safest conclusion is therefore that the DBC-610 appeared around 1988, with firm catalogue evidence confirming that it was on sale by 1989.
What we can say with confidence is that the DBC-610 belongs firmly to the great period of Casio experimentation of the late 1980s — a time when electronic watches were becoming increasingly sophisticated and Casio was one of the companies pushing them forward.
The DBC-610 and Its Relatives
The DBC-610 wasn't an isolated experiment.
Casio developed an entire family of Databank and calculator watches, ranging from relatively simple models to watches capable of storing increasingly large amounts of information.
The DBC-61 was effectively the black resin alternative to the DBC-610, using the same Module 676 but with a black resin case and resin strap. For buyers who preferred something less metallic and more overtly functional-looking, it offered the same impressive electronics in a noticeably different package. The DBC-62 provided another interpretation of essentially the same electronic platform.
This modular approach was typical Casio.
One successful piece of electronics could appear in several watches, with differences in cases, straps, styling and market positioning.
It also means collectors today can explore the same underlying technology through several quite different-looking watches.
Why Surviving Examples Need Careful Inspection
The DBC-610 has one particular area that collectors should pay close attention to: the keypad.
After decades of ageing, the membrane-style keyboard can deteriorate. Examples can show cracking, discolouration, lifting or damaged printed markings, and a cosmetically attractive watch can still have keys that fail to register properly.
That makes a fully functioning original keypad particularly desirable.
When buying one today, don't simply check whether the display is working.
Test every key.
Try entering numbers into the calculator. Enter letters into the Databank. Check the light, alarm, stopwatch, timer and other modes.
The condition of the LCD should also be inspected for bleeding or missing segments, while the case and bracelet deserve the usual checks for wear and damage.
With a watch like the DBC-610, functionality is a significant part of the appeal. A perfect-looking calculator watch with half of its keyboard dead has lost much of what makes it special.
Originality Matters
Collectors also need to consider originality.
Replacement keypad overlays can improve the appearance of otherwise functional examples, which is perfectly reasonable for somebody who simply wants to wear and enjoy one. Where the keypad contacts themselves have failed, however, more extensive repair may be required.
For a collector, however, an intact original keypad in excellent condition is much more interesting.

The same applies to the bracelet, case and other external components.
These were watches designed as everyday electronics rather than future collectibles, so finding one decades later with its original components in exceptional condition is becoming increasingly difficult.
That scarcity is part of the appeal.
A Glimpse of the Smartwatch Before the Smartwatch
Calling the DBC-610 a smartwatch would be historically misleading.
It wasn't connected to anything.
But the philosophy behind it feels remarkably modern.
A watch didn't have to be limited to telling the time.
It could store your contacts.
It could remind you of appointments.
It could calculate.
It could keep track of another time zone.
It could organise small pieces of your daily life.
Today we take all of those functions for granted because they sit inside our phones and smartwatches. In the late 1980s, having them available on your wrist felt very different.
And unlike today's devices, there were no software updates, subscriptions or apps.
Just a battery, an LCD, a tiny keyboard and some extremely clever electronics.
Why the DBC-610 Still Matters
There are Casios that are rarer than the DBC-610. There are others that are considerably more valuable.
But collectability isn't always about rarity or price.
Some watches matter because they capture a particular moment in technological history.
The DBC-610 does exactly that.
It comes from a period when the digital watch was still a platform for experimentation. Casio wasn't simply changing colours or case shapes — it was asking what else a wristwatch might actually do.
Calculator.
Telephone directory.
Appointment book.
World timer.
Stopwatch.
Countdown timer.
Alarm.
All sitting on your wrist.
That combination of usefulness, ambition and unmistakably retro design is why the DBC-610 deserves its place among the great Casio Databanks.
More than thirty years later, most of us carry technology that the engineers who designed it could only have imagined.
Yet somehow, pressing those tiny keys and watching a telephone number appear on an LCD still feels special.
And that might be the best explanation for why watches like the Casio DBC-610 continue to fascinate collectors today.
